Background of the study
Igbo proverbs have long served as a repository of wisdom, cultural values, and social norms within the Igbo community. These concise, metaphorical expressions are deeply embedded in daily communication and play a critical role in the transmission of cultural identity from one generation to the next (Chukwu, 2023). Proverbs function as an essential medium for imparting moral lessons, guiding social behavior, and reinforcing a collective sense of belonging among the Igbo people. In contemporary society, where modernization and globalization challenge cultural continuity, the relevance of traditional proverbs is both contested and reaffirmed. Recent studies indicate that despite the influence of Western ideologies, Igbo proverbs continue to shape identity by connecting individuals with ancestral wisdom and cultural heritage (Eze, 2024). Additionally, these traditional expressions reflect linguistic creativity and adaptability, mirroring shifts in societal values over time. This research aims to assess the role of Igbo proverbs in constructing both individual and collective identities, examining their contribution to a dynamic cultural discourse that navigates the interface between tradition and modernity (Nwankwo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the acknowledged cultural significance of Igbo proverbs, empirical research on their role in contemporary identity formation is limited. Modern educational systems and media often marginalize these traditional expressions, risking the erosion of indigenous wisdom and weakening cultural bonds (Okoro, 2024). This marginalization is compounded by the rapid adoption of global communication styles, which may overshadow the nuanced lessons embedded in proverbs. The absence of comprehensive studies addressing these dynamics hampers efforts to preserve and integrate indigenous wisdom into modern contexts. This study seeks to evaluate the influence of Igbo proverbs on identity formation, providing evidence that can support cultural preservation initiatives and inform strategies to incorporate traditional narratives into contemporary discourse.
